Manchester Airport Expansion Update

March 2020 update

27th Mar 2020

The Covid-19 pandemic is the biggest global health emergency for several decades, affecting all aspects of society and all sectors of the economy. While the full impacts on the aviation industry are not entirely known, it is our view that it represents the biggest challenge we have faced for a generation, if not ever.

The significant downturn in flights and passenger volumes we are experiencing has resulted in us reducing our operations to a single terminal. There remains no certainty as to when a normal flying programme will resume and, as a result, when we will return all our terminals to operation.

With that in mind, we have also taken the decision to postpone the opening of the extension to Terminal 2, being delivered as part of our £1bn transformation programme, beyond this summer.

It is our current intention to complete the physical delivery of the building as planned, which puts us in the best possible place to complete all trials and tests, and work towards a formal launch when the time is right for us and our partners.

As we have previously communicated, MAG is working hard to protect the long-term sustainability of its business, and its airports – including Manchester – will have a major role to play in driving a strong recovery of the aviation sector, and the UK economy as a whole.
